Chapeltown Swimming Club make it 4-in-a-row for Corporation Cup

Chapeltown Swimming Club once again retained the prestigious Corporation Cup at the Sheffield & District Championships held on Sunday 3rd February at Ponds Forge International pool. This is the 4th year in a row Chapeltown have won the prestigious cup which forms the finale of the all day swimming competition.

The Cup, which was first won in 1899, is awarded to the winning team of four swimmers each of which swim a 50m length as part of the freestyle race. Unusually, the race is handicapped based on the cumulative times of the team members, with team starting in a staggered format based on their times, resulting in an exciting finish to the race. To add an extra element, and prevent any element of cheating within the handicapping, the teams are only allowed to finish 4 seconds less than their accumulated times to avoid disqualification.

This year’s Chapeltown team, pictured left to right, were, Daniel Canetti (age 14) and Bradley Swinburn (age 13), Ben Hale (age 16), and Daniel Bates (age 14).

The winning team are normally awarded an impressive trophy to share throughout the year, however, given the history and value if the trophy it was decided that from now on each swimmer will receive a plaque.

In addition to their victory in the Corporation Cup, the Chapeltown squad (pictured) managed numerous trophies, gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as a number of new personal best times and Yorkshire Region qualifying times. Amongst the winners was Tom Allen who received the trophy for best boy in the 15 years age group.

“Whilst the club has a strong emphasis on fun and fitness, and all our swimmers benefit from the regular training sessions, it’s the competitions that give them the rewards for all their efforts. It was great to see so many swimmers doing so well through out an excellent gala; winning the Corporation Cup for the fourth time was the icing on the cake,” commented John Potts, Boy’s Team Manager for Chapeltown ASC.
